INTRODUCTION

Welcome to this Bible study on the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7.

Matthew 5:1-2
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

Whether you are one of the crowd or one of Jesus’ disciples, my prayer is for you to hear and receive the words of our Lord spoken long ago but still speaking to us. May it change your heart toward God and help you to grow closer to Him.

One thing I absolutely love to do is read chunks of the Bible or an entire book of the Bible in one sitting. The first time I read the Bible in this way, I was amazed at what a different perspective I gained on God’s Word. Reading the books as a whole allowed me to see a bigger picture. It helped me to understand more clearly the specific topics laid out in the Bible. Also, it helped me to see how certain topics and ideas are connected, how they relate to each other, and even how they explain each other.

When I read the Sermon on the Mount with this mindset, I noticed that the Lord’s Prayer was the center of the sermon and that Jesus was using the points of the sermon to explain the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus laid out the instructions of how and why to pray!

Matthew 6:9-13
9 This, then, is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.”

Jesus came to us with His Kingdom, and by His death on the cross, He established a new covenant. By rising from the grave, He made it possible for us to receive everlasting life in His Kingdom. In offering us this new eternal life, Jesus needed to teach us how to enter His Kingdom and how to live in His Kingdom. Inevitably, He needed to teach us how to pray.

Jesus taught us to pray with purpose. In prayer, we learn about God and His Kingdom. In prayer, we surrender ourselves and all we have to Him and to the will of His Kingdom. In prayer, we learn that we are one with Him, we are His children fully dependent on Him, and we are partakers of His Kingdom. In prayer, we see that sin has no place in us and His love is poured into our hearts. In prayer, we can stand against the power of darkness. Prayer becomes our very life. To walk with Christ is to pray.

Hebrews 12:22-29
22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”

The Lord’s Prayer has become a rote recitation for many people today, something that has been memorized and repeated so many times that it almost seems meaningless. My hope is that when you pray the Lord’s Prayer, you will have an understanding of what you are praying. I hope the words of the Sermon on the Mount will guide you and help you to pray as the Lord was teaching us to pray.

We can study different elements and find different topics of Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, but it is important to see that they make up one whole message and are tightly connected. In this study, we want to see how the Sermon on the Mount explains the Lord’s Prayer. Each lesson in this study looks at a particular line in the Lord’s Prayer and relates it to particular teachings within the Sermon on the Mount.

Before you jump into the lessons in this book, please read the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7. If you can read it several times over a couple of days, that is even better. Here’s why: I’d like you to become familiar with Jesus’ words, but more importantly, I want you to remember that the Holy Spirit is our primary teacher. Let Him speak to you before you go through the lessons of this book.

I have included the NIV text for Matthew 5-7. However, if you have a Bible translation you prefer, please feel free to use it.

When you go through the lessons, read carefully every scripture listed. Please don’t glance over them; really study them and think about them. Please look them up in your Bible and read them in their context as well. These scriptures are very important since they are the true words of God.

Each time you read the Bible text in the lessons, ask the Holy Spirit to teach you His Word and how you can apply it in your life. Allow the texts to speak to you beyond the teaching offered in the lessons.

I’m so excited for you to do this Bible study because it has taught me a lot. My prayer is that it will do the same for you. God bless you!
